A Smart Cookie

  • Here we have another cautionary tale and this one is told to Esperanza by her mother. Esperanza's mother warns her about refraining from participating in life because of shame. Refraining from life will only perpetuate the shame in her lesson. Explain the significance of the last sentence: "I was a smart cookie then".
    • I think that there are two meanings to this: 1) She believes she made a good choice to drop out of school and will pursue her dream to go get a house of her own. 2) I think she was sarcastic and that that was one of the mistakes in her life.
